James (“Jay”) Mayfield, Of Counsel

Jay Mayfield joined BCIP in 2025. He has extensive experience with computer science and information technologies. His practice experience includes the preparation of patent applications, patent prosecution, and freedom-to-operate analyses.
Jay has worked with a wide variety of technologies, including computer software and hardware, machine learning/AI, natural language processing, image processing, computer networking, databases, cybersecurity, virtual and augmented reality, Internet-of-Things (IoT) software and hardware, life science and healthcare-related software, blockchain, and e-commerce.
Jay began his career in intellectual property as in-house counsel at IBM. While at IBM, he gained extensive experience with the preparation and prosecution of software-related inventions, especially with regard to patent eligibility. During law school, Jay worked as a patent agent intern at a patent boutique firm prosecuting patent applications for various technical inventions. Previously, Jay was an associate attorney at Edell, Shapiro, and Finnan, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Prior to his career in intellectual property, Jay worked at a civil engineering firm performing tasks relating to highway engineering and topographical surveying.
In his free time, Jay enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, playing board games, cooking, and traveling.
